Ms. Fejza was among the thousands of Hungarian Jews who were deported to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. After being liberated by the Russian army, she and her family fled to Austria and then to Hungary, before being sent to Auschwitz again. She and her family were liberated for the fifth and final time by the British army in 1945. As the world marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, a 96-year-old Holocaust survivor has been killed by shelling in eastern Ukraine. Hanna Sfar, who was born in the town of Miedzyrzec Podlaski in the then German province of Poland, survived four concentration camps: Auschwitz, Majdanek, Buchenwald, and Sachsenhausen. Sfar had traveled to Kyiv to visit her daughter and grandchildren this past summer when the fighting in the east began.

According to local reports, Kor and her two daughters were woken up by the sound of shelling and ran towards a shelter when they were hit by shrapnel. And friends, who also paid merchants to protect her from Nazi soldiers. It is with heavy hearts that we report the death of Ruth Kluger after she was killed by shelling in Ukraine. Ms. Kluger and her family were among the millions of people who were persecuted and enslaved during the Nazi regime. After surviving four concentration camps, Ms. Kluger and her husband emigrated to the United States in 1950. They settled in Queens, New York, and raised two children. In 2003, Ms. Kluger received a United States Holocaust Memorial Museum prestigious award for her work as a Holocaust educator and historian.
