He says there was a video that went viral wherein several members of the class were wearing face masks and not taking their seats. The footage showed him to be unhappy with the students for failing to be seated when called upon. This included face-to-face interactions with his staff members to show their distaste for these actions. The video, reportedly from a speech given by Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis and leaked online by Florida Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum’s campaign, shows DeSantis scolding students for wearing face masks.

A viral social media trend, known as Masking, got started after the Parkland school massacre. It has encouraged students to wear masks as an expression of their opposition to gun violence and political inaction on the part of lawmakers. It’s Halloween season, a time when kids get to dress up and pretend that the sugar cookies are extra-delicious this year.

But not everyone gets to partake in the seasonal fun: Florida gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis has come out against wearing face masks — and there’s a controversial video to prove it. Apparently, no one told the DeSantis campaign that scary costumes are in this season. Or maybe they have to save terrifying tricks for later and show voters what scares them most about his opponent, Andrew Gillum. Regardless, the campaign of Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum released a trove of email correspondence between his staff members versus those in the office of Republican Ron Desantis. The letters show sizable gaps between how each candidate’s team views issues relevant to black people.
