He was born on March 3, 1961, in Kyiv and grew up there. He graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute’s shipbuilding department in 1985. He served on the Soviet cruiser Kirov (rechristened Aurora). On Nov 25, Russia lost one of its most spectacular heroes of the Syrian campaign – Major-General Andrey ‘Andry’ Paliy, a 42-year old veteran of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War with the rank of major-general and former commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet submarines who, in autumn 2015, left his previous post and moved to Syria where he led the Russian Marines contingent in Aleppo and afterward moved to back to Mariupol in support of the Ukrainian defense efforts against pro-Kremlin forces.
